If you read my posts carefully, which I am certain you did, you will have noticed that I did not categorize the strategy as either bad or good, but just that it should be recognized for what it is, and therefore what it is best suited for.

Trading AVXL was probably the best strategy for a long time, until it wasn't; it would have succeeded better than trading around a core until then. But it also came with a sudden price.

In response to Steady's last post, everything can be measured in degrees. The greater the core, the less the hedge.

I just have read a great number of posts on this board that seem to assume that this strategy is clearly superior. It has its downside like every other strategy. The choices we make -- timing transactions, sizing transactions, hedging or not hedging -- are the critical elements to our fortune here. And some of that, best judgments notwithstanding, is driven by luck.
