Modular Generalized Framework for Assessing Aircraft Aero-Propulsive, Stability, and Control Characteristics
https://www.vsddl.com/projects/

Status: Active
Collaborators: Dr. Vivek Ahuja (Research in
Flight), Prof. Roy Hartfield (Auburn University)

This multi-year project, funded by NASA Langley Research Center, aims to develop tools, processes, and methods to assess and evaluate stability and control characteristics of unconventional aircraft configurations in early design. The joint proposal was submitted by Research in Flight and VSDDL (Auburn University) in response to NASA Research Announcement (NRA) NNH18ZEA001N, Amendment No. 2, Subtopic 2.1.6 of the Transformational Tools and Technology (TTT) project, “Stability and Control Characteristic Estimation Methods for the Conceptual Design Phase of Unconventional Aircraft for Physics-Based Analysis, Sizing, and Optimization”.

The joint research will contribute towards NASA’s interest in developing methods for analysis of aircraft static and dynamic stability characteristics that are applicable to unconventional aircraft concepts and also suitable for the conceptual design stage. The goal is to demonstrate the developed capabilities through simulation of the dynamics of unconventional fixed-wing aircraft configurations with tight coupling of propulsion and
aerodynamic characteristics, including evaluation of active control systems. The team will make use of and further develop Research in Flight’s trademark Flightsteam tool, as well as link it with a flexible and modular MATLAB/Simulink-based flight simulation framework.

Deal on the merits of the company, not on the hopes or fears of the inexperienced.
