Shear forces from impacts can cause severe brain damage, so to me it does not sound like quack science.
Shear forces, aka twisting, can sever synapses between various parts of the brain, and connections within different parts of the brain matter a great deal.

Simply pounding your head against the wall, or a car windshield, can cause brain swelling, which is a problem in and of itself, but doesn’t sever synapses to the degree that a sideways blow can when it sends your head spinning.
