Of course, that 500,000 figure doesn't include all the "excess deaths" that have been occurring this year -- from people who never engage with hospitals, never in a million years would admit they have COVID, and those collateral folks who elected or had to put off medical care because of fear of exposure or because medical resources have been otherwise occupied. The overall death stats provide a solid number; they are way, way up.

I have a brother practicing medicine in a very red area where denial was high, and deaths have followed. His office staff is representative of that culture -- one said to him recently "when you said there was going to be a pandemic, I thought you were crazy." Now his staff, having experienced illness and deaths in their own families, tell patients "Don't believe the fake news -- get the vaccine."
