When I first got HDTV I limped along with S-video and optical audio from the DVR, video quality was bad - I loved my $800 Yamaha 7.1 surround sound stereo, had real amplifiers (not MOSFETS), put out an actual 100 watts/channel, could shake the paintings off my living room wall if I cranked it up watching a war movie, but I had to get a new HDMI capable stereo, S-video just didn't cut it anymore. Newer one claims 100 w/channel but it's peak power draw is only 235 watts - clearly a lie, although it's still plenty loud enough after adding a subwoofer, didn't have enough low frequency grunt. I'm one of the rare people who still has full size full range speakers hooked up to my TV/stereo setup - monsters capable of handling 200 w each - their woofers are only a few inches smaller than the subwoofer.
