Wynn Resorts (WYNN) Shareholders Have Enjoyed A 46% Share Price Gain
By: Simply Wall St | February 12, 2021

The main point of investing for the long term is to make money. Better yet, you'd like to see the share price move up more than the market average. But Wynn Resorts, Limited (NASDAQ:WYNN) has fallen short of that second goal, with a share price rise of 46% over five years, which is below the market return. Unfortunately the share price is down 14% in the last year.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

During five years of share price growth, Wynn Resorts actually saw its EPS drop 45% per year.

This means it's unlikely the market is judging the company based on earnings growth. Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.

The revenue growth of 1.9% per year hardly seems impressive. So why is the share price up? It's not immediately obvious to us, but a closer look at the company's progress over time might yield answers.

You can see how earnings and revenue have changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).

Wynn Resorts is well known by investors, and plenty of clever analysts have tried to predict the future profit levels.

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

We'd be remiss not to mention the difference between Wynn Resorts' total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price return. The TSR attempts to capture the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested) as well as any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings offered to shareholders. Wynn Resorts' TSR of 61% for the 5 years exceeded its share price return, because it has paid dividends.

A Different Perspective

Investors in Wynn Resorts had a tough year, with a total loss of 14%, against a market gain of about 27%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 10%, each year, over five years. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Case in point: We've spotted 4 warning signs for Wynn Resorts you should be aware of, and 1 of them is potentially serious.

We will like Wynn Resorts better if we see some big insider buys. While we wait, check out this free list of growing companies with considerable, recent, insider buying.
