It looks like the vaccines should still protect against the various strains known thus far....however, This South African strain is the one that we need to maybe worry about. And in the news they confuse the term South African strain. They often refer to the British mutation that showed up quickly in South Africa as a South African strain...but sparing ya all the details...this one is potentially a real deal. It mutated its coat protein. Antibodies from survivors and vaccinated persons were about 50% less effective...that does not mean however that ya have a 50% chance of catching it if ya had the original or the vaccine...but you do have a likely larger than otherwise chance. The one saving grace may be the mRNA method used to develop this vaccine...it’s gonna win a Nobel. The vaccine can be easily edited to mimick any coat protein changes. But that kind of world is one I’m not excited to live in. Let’s hope we all get vaccinated if ya can and the host reservoir quickly diminishes so we get less frequent mutations.
As these buggers are encapsulated in fatty acids...and they don’t have genes for these to change...V may honest to god be a complete game changer. Fingers crossed for prepare it. My only concern is that the virus is so prevalent among the participants that we only see biomarker and hospitalization reduction. But I’d still take that.
