From what I've read there are multiple possibilities..

1) COVID is probably not any more communicable than cold or flu. We've never used something like PCR for diagnosis and it is not intended for that. Overamplification of PCR tests results in false positives so his positive test could have been the remnants of the last SARS. If you haven't noticed, the emphasis is on "cases" now and they are slipping in cumulative death totals

2) Loss of smell and taste happens with cold or flu too. So that doesn't indicate COVID.

Ference, MD, an otolaryngologist at Keck Medicine of USC and assistant professor of clinical otolaryngology – head and neck surgery at the Keck School of Medicine of USC. “The viruses can cause inflammation, either to the nerve or to the lining of the nose, that impacts the normal function of our sense of smell.”

When smell is lost, often taste is, too. “Approximately 80% of the flavors we taste come from our sense of smell, so if our nerves related to smell are not working, then we also have an impairment in our sense of taste,” Ference explains. “Taste that is sensed on the tongue — salty, sweet, sour and bitter — will still be present. However, the subtlety of food, such as oregano on pizza, will be lost.”

3) The grand daughter - they have concluded that young children don't transmit the disease easily even if it was COVID.

The only thing I am sure of - we aren't getting the whole story here.
