Could be pre specified trial milestones structured in the contract.

Also just to be clear as I am writing this, most financing “deals” accepted by CEO’s give shares away at a discounted price to a room full of crooks who typically short against the box and crash the price. What does our CEO secure as a secondary form of financing, another 3rd party who this time pays not 100% of fair market value but 200% of fair value! I had to reprocess that because Im sorry but I have never heard of that before....ever!
