Saw a pretty damn scary documentary about Yellowstone last month - the lava chamber below it is incredibly massive, larger than any other known chamber by a huge multiple - if that thing explodes like some chambers have in the past life is over, nuclear winter. It was on Discovery or one of their sister channels, but I kinda wish I hadn't watched it! Reminds me of something I looked up back in my govvie days - Grandma had heard a meteor was going to pass between the earth and moon, scientists couldn't by sure yet that it would miss us or the Moon (loss of Moon's gravitational pull would be catastrophic), she asked me to look into it. I didn't find any research on that particular meteor of course, but what I found about other ones and meteors in general, plus collision probabilities, was damn worrisome - we were WAY overdue for a meteor strike of the size that hit Siberia in 1908 (are even more overdue now, of course, this is 30 yrs later), but worse, we likely will never see a meteor on a collision course with us coming - we can only see the paths of ones that miss us - if it's coming straight at us it will not be visible before it's too late. Not like we have any way of diverting one even if we could spot it.
