Development stage biotech companies hire senior people all the time. It doesn't mean they are supremely confident. It means they are trying to get answers to difficult problems and they need people in order to get those answers. In fact, I would argue that hiring somebody on an hourly basis instead of full time is a hedge against failure. If you have to let someone go because things don't work out, it's easier and less costly than firing a full-time employee.
