But there are no shorts currently, right? How can a non-existent position “need” anything?

If an investor currently doesn't own any shares of VERB but is patiently waiting for "the right time" to buy shares, does that mean they are not an investor? Of course not.

If a trader currently owns shares of VERB but is patiently waiting for "the right time" to trade their shares, does that mean they are not a trader? Of course not.

Similarly, if shorts currently aren't shorting any shares of VERB but are patiently waiting for "the right time" to short the stock, does that mean they are not shorters? Of course not.
