Probably not. My guess is that as each insane prediction fails, a new insane prediction will be substituted. These people are like the End Times crazies of the distant and even relatively recent past. They'd set a date for the end of the world, sell everything they owned, and spend months or more making preparations. When the world didn't end, did they exclaim: "What bullshit!! I was conned!! I'll never trust that guru again!!"?
Absolutely not! They just dreamt up a new story, and set a new date. Most of them weren't even upset.
Needless to say, that's a mentality I don't understand. And it brings us back to the Xers, to whom I compared Alchemy and his fellows yesterday. They spent hours every day spinning fantasies about the vast riches that would soon be theirs. Those fantasies weren't just "I'm gonna win the lottery!" stuff; they were very detailed and specific to the Xers. For years, their leaders told them to expect "packets" sent by DHL when the moment to "get paid" arrived. These packets wouldn't contain cash; shareholders would receive American Express credit cards containing the amounts "owed" to them. Cards of different colors would be issued, depending on the amount of stock each shareholder owned. If memory serves, there were four different categories.
And there was always a specific date attached to these fantasies, usually several months in the future. Excitement would build, and then naturally in the end, no packets arrived.
Did they throw up their hands and finally get mad at the people who'd been leading them on? Nope. They'd just set a new date, and begin their happy anticipation anew.
