I believe the record for worst commercial jet ever goes to the original jet airliner, the British made de Havilland Comet 1. Three of the planes experienced highly publicized, "catastrophic in-flight break-ups" in the first year. Actually, the first one never quite got off the ground. Initially, as with the Max, crashes were blamed on pilot error. Eventually over 10% of the planes would be involved in fatal crashes before the plane was grounded.
