Raising the minimum wage benefits the government, but does not do all that much for working stiffs. When wages go up, the government gets more income in the form of taxes, since raising the minimum has the effect of raising all wages. This is inflation, as more money chasing the same amount of goods ends in rising prices. More sales tax too. While it may feel good to say we are "helping" those at the bottom of the economic scale, it ends up being the same situation for them with no net change.
