I could be wrong about this but if I recall Tom Butt was wave's chief technology guy. However after N'Able was purchased, they acquired Len Veil who was N'Able's CTO. The two coexisted but after awhile Tom decided to leave and Len assumed the CTO role for wave. At the time, I thought it would be a big blow but Len has been a star. I've heard from those who know that ETS is really his baby.
