Among many lost from my town, we lost a neighbor who worked at Cantor Fitzgerald, along with a number of his colleagues who were going to move from the twin towers to a new local office a few weeks later. Just one of so many lost in this tragedy and there have been more lost after the attack of cancers and other diseases acquired at and near ground zero by survivors and those that helped with the aftermath. My uncle escaped being an immediate victim having a business close to the towers, however he shortly developed strange and debilitating physical disease followed by an early dementia and ultimately death. Volunteers and first responders and utility workers, etc., helping with the aftermath developed diseases and slowly lost their lives, including a relative of mine that worked for Con Edison restoring/maintaining electricity services, and employees that took time off from work to volunteer in any way they could.

And it was such an exquisitely beautiful day that day that it felt surreal as I drove to my daughter’s school to pick her up under mandatory early closing less than 20 miles from ground zero. Yes we remember and listen to the names every 9/11.
