Constance Nash tricked CEO Greg Halpern (rather easily it seems, he's not very smart when it comes to written documents) into paying her half a million dollars down-payment to share rights for american + european patents, but played shell games to keep control of the american patent.

Regardless of the control: both patents are absolutely worthless except as a hook to gull naive investors into giving away money.
