The CLDX PR notes very clearly it was a genetic subset. The effect of that is up for debate, but certainly establishes a population that can not be compared to the entire population.

As far as NWBO's paper, read into it what you want.

And again, there is nothing wrong with having a selection benefit in a randomized trial. Only that it makes historical comps difficult to impossible.
