A New Direction For Venturis Therapeutics - Part 2

Before we get too far into this series, I want to address one of the key objections at Venturis Therapeutics to pursuing the Alcoholic Impotence indication. Reportedly, Venturis believes that it would be difficult to recruit for such a clinical trial. To that, I say, nonsense. For sure some clinical trials are difficult to recruit for, but this isn't one of them.

Folks, there's work that's been done on this very issue by Dr. Angus Innes, so there's no need to re-create the wheel. Dr. Innes has identified where he finds subjects for his studies, and it really presents a roadmap that Venturis would be wise to follow. It comes down to identifying the alcoholic in his/her native habitat:

1) Bars. Dr. Innes spoke with bartenders at bars to identify some of their best alcoholics, and offered a recruitment incentive to them for doing so. He said this worked unevenly, but in the situations where it worked, it was tremendous.

2) Liquor stores. No one knows who the alcoholics are better than a liquor store. Sure, this is not information they are going to share with anyone, but Dr. Innes indicated that when he presented his academic credentials and explained the reason for his study, in certain instances he received strong cooperation.

3) Yet the most productive location to find alcoholics, according to Dr. Innes, is wedding venues. Dr. Innes indicated that every weekend, wedding venue General Managers can see very clearly who the hopeless alcoholics are once open bar begins (particular upscale wedding venues were open bars are the norm). It makes perfect sense - unlike the first two habitats, a wedding removes whatever financial constraints the alcoholic has, and he/she will drink excessively and quickly to take advantage of the situation. And when the alcholic is so drunk that he can't even get up, walk, let alone go back to his hotel room and needs several guests to carry him, well, could the recruiting get any easier? Yes, Dr. Innes acknowledges, one has to get past the belligerence that can often by found with the drunkard in this situation, but Dr. Innes indicates that eventually once that period passes, the alcoholic will often be willing to sign up for the trial. But Dr. Innes cautions that the researcher must move quickly to sign up the alcoholic before the cycle begins again. Repeat ad nauseum.
