I don't think the Chinese are "transactional" as Trumpty: EG "I need you to do me a favor, though."

For years China has been making inroads of influence all around the world by doing "nice things" with no immediate expectation of payback. Sure, they anticipate a degree of loyalty as a result of the largess, but overall they are very much about the long term game.

I expect that China will share the results of their research with the world, including the U.S.
