Scientific method. Having a control group is always required in order to generate scientifically significant results. It also helps drug companies know if they should really continue what they are doing. If your results show that the placebo preforms better or equal to your drug, you probably have dumped a lot of money into a project not worth the time and effort. If your results are significantly higher than the placebo there is something to what you brewed up in the lab.
