Reverse Splits overwhelmingly fail. As you imply, they create a new downside for shorts to ride right back down, the results being that
the share price tanks and the holders end up with a fraction of their
share count. Wash, rinse, repeat. However, there are some situations where an RS can work. If a company is viable but greatly undervalued, for
example the parent company fails in another sector and has to spin off
a solid subsidiary cheap (AIG). Or if a young company with bonafide growth prospects wants to early boost the share price for listing requirements. However, it is generally much more desirable to increase the value the old fashion way, through hard work and organic growth, in which case there is no need for an RS.
