Has any company ever done that, sold a brand name & a generic?

Not sure if it even makes any sense, because how would Amarin's GV be any different than the real V? I assume it wouldn't, but IF generics will be allowed to undercut Amarin, why can't Amarin do the same + be allowed to advertise their product(s)?!
