If your first bank account paid 6% then you're pretty young. Passbook rates (an archaic reference) also were about 1% in the late 1940s thru the early 1950s.
Anything new paying 3.5% is a loss leader. It won't last long. I have insured 5-year bank CDs paying that, but I bought them in early 2019.
