The approximately 2 million dead in the original estimate was revised downward to 100-200 thousand, then downward again. In fact at recently as April 20, it was estimated that by April 30 deaths may reach 50,000. We will reach 60,000 tomorrow. The 100-200 thousand now looks very reachable before next winter in light of how loose we are suddenly becoming with quarantining and social distancing. I will admit there is a balance between viral and economic consequences. But the genie is already out of the bottle. Unless we get lucky fast in finding good treatments of symptoms (not saying cure here, but only mitigation) we are going down hard. We should not just focus on just deaths, but also what appear to be a set of devastating side effects, and potential of long term reduction of human life span. I'll be curious to see how the actuaries measure all this up.
