I hope that's not the case. And trust me, I'm not bagging on Mike or the skill sets he brings to the company. But one of the very best attributes any executive can have is to make himself replaceable, to train subordinates and to equip them with all the tools they themselves need to take over one day.

Using your own example, Steve Jobs had spent years training Tim Cook to take over. The same is true for Jim Senegal at Costco Wholesale. Jim was the visionary and founder. But when he left there wasn't so much as a hiccup at the company. Why? Because competent people had been trained to take over.

I can guaranty that there will be a day when Mike Jennings leaves the company. That might occur next year. It might be twenty years from now. But he will leave one day and there had better be continuity of leadership in place.
