That is what many people miss.

A homemade mask will not protect against virus in a aerosol form, but that is not the major issue. It will offer decent protect against droplets in both directions, and hands to the face. These are how it mainly spreads.

Even a motorcycle helmet (with faceplate down) would help.

In much of Asia, prior to this, you would see many (3 or 4 percent) of people outside with masks. There were not doing this because they were afraid. And not because they had some super bug. They could have any ordinary cold/flu and would do this. Just because that is what they learned to do to avoid massive deaths from any old flu or whatever comes along.

EDIT: "Decent" protection is enough to provide the needed herd immunity.
