I remember an ED doc I worked with many many years ago who asked somewhat rhetorically about "who would you be better served by if you needed glasses- an ophthalmologist (a medical doctor who specializes in eyes) or an optometrist (a NON medical doctor? The answer is the optometrist because they spend the majority of their practice time testing and fitting glasses...in other words, that's all they do. That's what they have experience in whereas the surgeon spends very little (if any) time actually working with patients testing and fitting for glasses. Just because they aren't a medical doctor DOESN'T mean they aren't the best resource...
