I have no idea why anybody thinks steam will help unless one wants to live in a steam room.

It will reduce the ability of the virus to spread both by mechanical effects and the temperature being able to kill the "naked" virus. That is not going to kill any existing infection as the virus is protected from the heat by your body itself. You would actually have to raise the temp of your cells and body fluid significantly. As hot as it might feel, that is not going to happen.
