I think what he stated is that the retailers typically won’t approve an announcement until product is on shelf and that he wants to announce as early as possible

Perhaps you blinked and missed it???

And that he would always defer to the wishes of the retailer over the curiosity of investors (which makes a ton of sense to me....).

I’m sure he must have gotten approval from the retailer before releasing. So, there it is
