My Recent Cardiac Story - I am 57, healthy, had no known cardiac disease, and work out regularly. My son and I worked out Saturday, and after lifting weights, I thought I had a muscle spasm between my shoulder blades. It got intense and did not go away, and after feeling a little nausea and heartburn sensation, it fortunately worried me enough that I went to the ER right away. I was shocked when they told me I was having a heart attack, and they immediately got me to the cath lab. I had 100% blockage of one artery, and they think a piece of plaque broke loose and blocked the artery. I got treated so fast that my troponin levels were not even elevated yet. They put in a drug eluting stent, and added meds, and after 2 days in the hospital for monitoring, I now feel fine. It was a surreal experience. I had tried a year ago to get V as a MACE preventative, and insurance would not cover it (was not on the Navitus formulary at all - they only had generic L). I had argued directly with the CEO of Navitus to get it, with no positive results. I just checked the Navitus formulary again, and apparently V has very recently been added as a tier 2 medication (from no coverage at all before). I just wrote my MD to get a V prescription again - I am now exactly the person who can benefit from it, and am so glad it is available. The only bad news was that the cardiologist and interventional cardiologist I saw in the hospital had never heard of V. The company has a wide new market they can tap if they can get the word out there to all cardiologists. The two I saw were interested after I told them about it, with one talking about the importance of anti-inflammatory effects of CV drugs.
