What is a Technical Default?

A technical default doesn’t mean the company ran out of money, it just means they failed to uphold one of the debt covenant rules. The lender can then demand all its money back today instead of having to wait until the actual maturity date down the road. Even if the company finds a way to renegotiate the loan, the stock price often takes a huge hit.
