I figured they were rappers.

I'm not well versed on the rap music genre. My view of it is the internet enables just about anyone to record anything using equipment you can buy off the shelf from Wal Mart. You can get it copyrighted. Then you can burn your own CDs and try to sell them to pedestrians in front of the Starbucks on N Tryon in uptown Charlotte.
