Frame is stainless steel, front and back are glass. My belief is that the back glass is sapphire coated to make it so durable (Pro model). There have been recent Apple patents about sapphire coatings to improve durability of glass. If you have been around long enough, you may recall Apple's grand plan was to create a Liquidmetal and Sapphire phone. This is because the physical properties (such as hardness coefficient etc.) are so similar, that these two materials make a perfect match. The concept was to mold Liquidmetal around the sapphire to create a beautiful unibody, unbreakable phone. Then of course GTAT happened and severely set back this idea.

If you look at Apples recent patents, they again are again looking at at a Liquidmetal (called amorphous metal in patent) frame with glass "trenched" into the frame and then coated with sapphire to make a waterproof seal. I think this is what we will see next September.
