Opposition MP: Public perception of corruption level still very high in Armenia
"The corruption commission should do everything possible to prevent corruption, rather than wait for anyone to get involved in a corruption scheme and then catch them," Edmon Marukyan, a lawmaker from the opposition Bright Armenia faction, told reporters in the parliament on Tuesday, referring to Haykuhi Harutyunyan's appointment as chairperson of the Commission on Prevention of Corruption.
Harutyunyan's candidacy for the post had been nominated by the Bright Armenia faction.
Marukyan stressed the need to first and foremost get rid of the "widespread" corrupt system to clear the system of public administration and the economy of such “infection”.
"We had a different version of judges' vetting, but the burden was put on the shoulder of the commission. I hope that everything possible will be done in that direction," he said.
Marukyan disagreed with Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s claim that corruption has been rooted out in Armenia. “There is always corruption. Public perception of the corruption level is still very high, but there is no coordinated corruption in Armenia. Today there is corruption at lower levels,” he said.
