There is something about getting the water out of a high mountain stream

Yeah, and that something is called giardiasis (Giardia lamblia).

Any surface water in an area that has bears, whislepigs, or any small mammals can be infested with it. Even cold, clear snowmelt-driven streams.

Hope you boil it, use halazone tabs or bleach, or ultrafiltration.
