Cable Labs is an association made up of member cable companies. One of it's missions is to assist it's members to set standards that allow all members to develop/ recognize interchangeably of patents amongst it members. 99% of all domestic cable companies are members. Once a patent is identified (by Cable Labs) that patent become a standard all Cable companies adhere too.when recognized as a STANDARD
( believe ) their term in CERTIFIED, a member can use that patent through licensing.
No, Cable Labs is no the cable police but they can (I believe with agreement of members) act on behalf of it's members regarding negotiations with patent holders. By representing is members they can get a better deal for the industry and save same in court costs and final settlement. That settlement covers all members.... Cable Labs asses each member a proportionate fee of same settlement/award.
