The guy is a past president of the ACC, a lobbying organization. He has testified in front of the House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. He is asked to comment in articles and he gives speeches where organizations pay him. He is a public figure.

He directs his fees to be given to charity. Directly to charity such that he doesn't even get a tax break.

I don't think it's a fair argument that he benefits monetarily.

Of course, there are other conflicts beyond money in research and academia.

But to criticize the man for being conflicted without at least acknowledging the steps he takes to reduce that conflict isn't fair.
