If that drive is only lasting 5 or 6 years then something smells. I am assuming that it is a lap top. I typically have two/three hard drives for storage and a ssd for boot/OP system. A hard drive is more durable than a solid state...so if you run only a solid state then your life span is shortened. I have multiple sata hd's "in use" that have been written over numerous times that are over 12 years old.
To be fair...I have fixed many friends and neighbors laptops/desktops that have been neglected(understatement). If you are an Apple consumer..then you are at their mercy. Don't get me started there.:)
Also, It is always good to clone one drive to the another for emergency situations and piece of mind. Think of drives like an auto' ... you take care of em' and they will last a long time . Or...you can just run them into the ground.
