Yep, I have found Apple's tech support to be relatively good. The only thing I have needed a store to do is replace the retina display on my 2013 MacBook Pro. It was a known defect with the anti-glare coating coming off. Replaced at no charge (it was a 4-year recall that was never publicized).
I do not use iCloud or any other cloud. I have an external hard drive (1 Terrabyte) that I use "Time Machine" (comes in the Apple OS) to back up the entire computer every Friday. Call me paranoid but I don't want anything on my computer out there in the "cloud". Of course, Andy Grove wrote a book called "Only The Paranoid Survive". Ha!
The external hard drives have become very reasonable and are very small. I use one called a "GDrive":
