From the limited papers on Pubmed, bouillon with MSG is the preferred way to get a glutamate buzz. MSG with food has less effect on plasma levels than MSG as soup. There is also some consistent circadian variation in glutamate levels, lower in the morning and higher in the afternoons. Of course all these references were in healthy adults.

As far as variations in Rett, I found only one reference with CSF and none with plasma glutamate. Glutamate was elevated in spinal fluid. One patient having 2 lumbar punctures 7 months apart had levels of 1.5 nmol/ml the first time and 3.9 the second time, a 260% variation. If CSF varies that much, I would also expect plasma to vary, possibly more.
