Given that the stock sales stopped for the most part over a year ago, the adage "you can't give back what you no longer have" probably applies.

The commissions from the stock sales is probably a drop in the bucket compared to the hole they are in. My understanding is that it only takes two creditors to force a company into involuntary insolvency. So once a couple of the former franchisees realize they won't get all or any money back, they will file with the court and it'll be time to turn the lights out. Every time I think about that possibility I get an image in my head of Bill Paxton in Aliens saying "game over, man. Game over."
