Its not legal to communicate and manipulate stocks so market makers used code by trading low number of shares. Most SEC regulated companies have compliance archiving setup to capture all messaging, and electronic communication for 7 years. MMs used code to relay information between market makers. Not sure how much of this is still real today since I can also buy 911 shares or 100 shares and make it look like it a signal. When the buy or sell with signal is for a amount with the 5th decimal point .15251 or similar it it more likely a MM sending the signal since retail cannot place trades using the 5th decimal.
