Try plugging in an USB mouse if you have one ... "plug & play" should recognize it and auto download the drivers for it. (I think most machines that have no problems will operate both of them simultaneously)
If the USB mouse works but the touch pad still doesn't then at least you can use the machine until you figure out what's wrong...
