The article itself is not old, however the news of the collaboration was known a while back.

This is a project to increase density of 3D Lithium Ion batteries built on XNRGIs model using Porous Silicon

That Trial and or Funding was set to begin in Sept 2019.

This may be a gambit by XNRGI to be able to produce a high density Lithium Ion battery vs their current Lithium Metal battery.

On Amobi we have seen a high temp Lithium Ion option, maybe they want to have a high density , high temp battery.

Not even a humble opinion, just a wild guess.
