Engineers know what you want. Just ask one.

I am an engineer.

Architects and engineers really want to write their own story. Just like most of us. The managers back then were mostly engineers if I remember. So it's no wonder we got what they wanted to build and not what the consumer wanted.

Another issue was inventory. back in those days they did not practice lean manufacturing or just in time manufacturing.

To stop a line and retool and restart was a hugely expensive undertaking. So, one good year that was well received by the consumer would result in years of minor variations in that vehicle style. Big fins - Small fins. More chrome, Less chrome. All simple changes. That and the US made motors required large frames. our first small engines were junk.
