XNRGI LITHIUM METAL BATTERY
New wonder battery from Canada
A Canadian company has developed a new type of battery, which should be many times more powerful than lithium-ion batteries. For electric cars, this would mean the end of coverage issues.
L ithium-ion batteries are a central issue of our time, not only because of electric mobility. Finally, the most effective batteries available today are also found in immeasurable devices such as smartphones, computers or power storage units for decentralized energy supply. Anyone developing a battery technology that is superior to Li-Io cells opens up a market worth billions.

Accordingly, feverishly researched on such alternatives worldwide and announced at regular intervals the ultimate breakthrough. The Canadian startup XNRGI is now entering this series, a hitherto largely unknown company in the industry.

More power, less costs
XNRGI claims to have developed a new lithium-metal battery designed to outstrip today's Li-Io batteries, not just in terms of power density, but also charging speed, cell safety and manufacturing. The unusual XNRGI concept builds the batteries on so-called wafers, as they have been known in computer chip manufacturing for decades. Consequently, XNRGI also calls the new battery "Powerchip".

This manufacturing is one of the core arguments for XNRGI: the batteries can be manufactured on existing large-scale computer production plants at low cost. The technology of the XNRGI battery is simplified in that on the wafer surface millions of microscopic "pores" are created, which are equipped with "microbatteries", in each pore its own, tiny battery.

Six times higher energy density
With this construction method, XNRGI promises quite impressive values. The energy density, so the capacity of a particular battery size, is supposed to be six times higher than a Li-Io battery. This would make batteries for electric cars not only much lighter, but also much smaller. In addition, due to the structure of the XNRGI batteries, self-ignition of damaged cells should be ruled out; this is a serious issue in today's lithium-ion batteries.

However, XNRGI sees electromobility as a later step. The startup, which claims to have collected $ 80 million from investors (including Intel, Motorola and the US government), will initially build stationary batteries. For example, stacks of wafer batteries are to be housed in standardized computer-server housings and packaged in commercial shipping containers and offered to energy suppliers as temporary storage. According to XNRGI, such a container should have a storage capacity of 4 megawatt hours.

XNRGI intends to deliver the first finished batteries as early as 2020. Currently, around 600 pre-series batteries have been delivered to interested customers for test purposes. In addition to stationary storage devices, mobile devices will benefit first and foremost from the new battery technology. XNRGI anticipates a deployment for electric mobility from 2024.
