I worked for a large chain of hospitals that's largest center prided itself on being an open heart/surgical center that performed the five major solid organ transplants. When statins first came out I was involved in strategy meetings of how the hospital was going to replace the open heart surgeries. Sure there would still be cardiac cats and drug eluting stents were becoming a big thing but the open heart surgeries were very lucrative and the money pumped into the system from those patients was large. They did in subsequent years go way down because of statins. They might not be for everyone but I would not discount them for everyone. I would never try and convince someone that needed statins that they should not take them.

I think that doctors may need to try and do a better job of managing patients taking statins They maybe should not take them off of statins but they may just lower the statin dose and try CoQ10 and Vascepa. They may need to work in combination instead of having mega doses of one thing trying to manage the patient. It is like a doctor trying to pump mega doses of niacin in a patient to lower triglycerides, what were they thinking.
