How seizures and Alzheimer’s are related - interesting read.

https://www.statnews.com/2019/07/19/alzheimers-role-of-seizures/

I have a unique perspective in my professional role of “clinical epileptologist” and have grown up to view the brain and it’s function from the perspective that there is an eloquent interplay between regional inhibitory and excitatory neural networks that, in a complicated amalgamation, regulate a dynamic, global whole brain network.

As the brain ages, the inhibitory/excitatory interplay becomes dysregulated - allowing for regional hyperexcitability which, in turn, leads to further regeneration.

We know that identifying and treating seizures dramatically lowers the risk of long term cognitive dysfunction for most patients in any age group that suffers from most forms of epilepsy. We know that controlling seizures in dementia contributes to a slower rate of decline of cognitive function.

So it makes sense from a systems neurobiological perspective why controlling seizures is important.

I view neurodegenerative disease, whichever form, as a progressive degradation of the inhibitory/excitatory neuronal network interplay - making global cerebral regulation more and more desynchronized.

This is why I don’t buy into nor will never buy into a therapeutic that is meant to eliminate a by-product of this complicated desynchronization of global neural networking. Clearing amyloid beta - why? Really?

Hampel has waxed poetic about a systems neurobiological approach to solving the mysteries of neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer’s. With great fanfare, he announced the “Precision Medicine Initiative” in 2017 describing the seemingly fruitless endeavor of prior Alzheimer’s trials and the need for a top down revolution on “how are we going to approach this dementia conundrum?”

Going against the grain has been the MO in terms of advancement beyond the failures of yore. Walking to the beat of a different drummer is exactly why I remain loyally invested in Anavex.
